New Glass on a 1992 Library: The Barnett Branch YKK Package
A full YKK package on the Columbus Metropolitan Library’s Barnett Branch: one new addition, one 1992 building, one set of drawings.

The Columbus Metropolitan Library reopened its Barnett Branch on December 13, 2025 at 3434 E. Livingston Ave. The project roughly doubled the building, from about 12,300 square feet to 22,000. Half of that is a new addition with a glass front on Livingston. The other half is the original 1992 branch, renovated and repainted charcoal.
Inside there are meeting rooms, study rooms, a recording studio, a teen room, and an aquarium. The aquarium will outdraw the curtain wall every single day. We are at peace with that.
Assured Glass Services installed the glazing. Steven B drew the set. Turner Construction ran the job, with Evoke Architecture and Schooley Caldwell on design.
The YKK Package
All YKK, all Duranar charcoal:
- YKK YCW 750 curtain wall system
- YKK YES 60TU storefront system
- YKK YES 45TU storefront system
- YKK YES 45FI storefront system
- YKK 50T thermal wide stile entrances
- YKK 50D standard wide stile entrances
- Duranar charcoal finish
The YCW 750 is the curtain wall at the addition’s full height glass, including the reading room elevation you can see from the street. YES 60TU where the storefront runs tall, 45TU at the standard openings, 45FI inside where a thermal break would be solving a problem that does not exist. 50T doors in the envelope, 50D doors inside.
One note on the finish. Duranar is paint, not anodize. “Charcoal” on a purchase order has a way of turning into charcoal anodized if the drawings are vague about it, so the set is not vague about it.
New Glass, Old Wall
The addition is the easy half. New structure, new openings, details close to what the YKK catalog assumes.
The 1992 side is the half worth talking about. New framing in existing masonry openings means field verification, because the original drawings and the actual wall stopped agreeing sometime around the 1992 election. Head, jamb, and sill details have to work with the brick and block that are really there, not the wall section from 1992.
There is also a sightline problem that renovation-plus-addition jobs create. The renovated openings and the new addition sit in plain view of each other. If the framing lines do not carry across, the building reads like a before-and-after photo of itself. So the set holds them.
If you have drawn renovation work before, none of this is news. If you have not, here is the takeaway: get the existing conditions onto the sheets. The installer should not be meeting the real wall for the first time on install day.
What This Job Looked Like on Paper
Four framing systems and two door series across new and existing construction, drawn as one set. Elevations that tell you which system you are looking at, details that account for which wall you are standing in front of, and a finish call-out that says the same thing on every sheet.
That is the whole trick. There is no secret.
